The Forfeit of Violating Labor Standards Law Is Going to Increase by 3 to 5 Times.
The administrative fine for work-hour violations, salary below basic wage, no overtime pay and wage arrears are NT$6,000 to NT$60,000. However, this isn’t enough to act as a deterrent. Amendments to the Labor Standards Act will bring the penalty to between NT$20,000 and NT$200,000. Moreover, the violating firm list will be announced to public.

The chairman and CEO of TSMC, Morris Chang, said his working hours has never exceeded 50 hours a week from past fifty years, no matter what position he is in. Morris Chang tries hard to let his employee believe that working below 50 hours a week can be executed, and they do make the change now. To Work effectively is more important than to finish one's duty. Employees of TSMC reduce the meeting hours to work effectively. They just have to join the meeting which is necessarily related to their work. Second, they work smart. They make the maximum utilization of technology.

Recently few death incidents from overwork in Taiwan caught government attention. To prevent more and more cases of work overtime, Labor Standards Law will increase the penalties for violating the act.
